my friend Fanny renovates homes is the French Concession area of Shanghai….they were built as mansions in the early 20th century and then turned into multi-family dwellings during Mao and are now being restored to mansion status….Fanny is obsesssive about retaining as much of the original structure and character as possible….the old bricks were much smaller and each brick was stamped with information….when these homes were built they mixed rice with the concrete between the bricks so in many places now they have to take everything apart and put each brick back exactly where it was…..
